Glucosamine Dosage for Pain Relief
Much research suggests that glucosamine is beneficial for reducing the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis. There are two primary forms of glucosamine available on the market: glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate.
Glucosamine Sulfate vs. Hydrochloride
Studies suggest that while glucosamine hydrochloride provides more glucosamine than sulfate products, statistically the average dosage of each product should come out to roughly 1,500 mg per day. That breaks down to three 500 mg doses per day. Some publications suggest that it is possible to take more, up to 2,000 mg per day for brief periods of time.
There is no evidence supporting the use of more glucosamine. No added benefits result from taking more than the recommended dosage. Patients that have allergies to shellfish should avoid taking glucosamine supplements without talking to their healthcare providers. Serious side effects may result.
Few side effects are reported among consumers using glucosamine. The most commonly reported adverse effects are stomach upset. This is a far cry from the ulcers and intestinal bleeding associated with the long-term use of NSAID’s commonly prescribed for osteoarthritis pain.
However, overdosing on glucosamine can result in serious side effects. In an attempt to realize fast results, or results that exceed what are possible, some consumers exceed the daily recommended dose of 1,500 mg of glucosamine. While not everyone will have severe side effects, some consumers report glucose intolerance or metabolic disorders resulting from glucosamine supplementation.
Glucosamine Warnings Cautions
Patients with diabetes or insulin resistance should be particularly cautious when supplementing with glucosamine. Pancreatic problems or deficiencies may contribute to adverse effects or insulin resistance. Insulin resistance among humans taking oral glucosamine needs to be studied further so more recommendations can be made regarding the safety and efficacy of glucosamine supplementation among insulin resistant or compromised individuals.
Immune compromised individuals, or patients with chronic health conditions may require less supplementation, or may have to take less depending on their overall health status.
Glucosamine Dosing Side Effects
The side effects from taking up to 1,500 mg per day are limited. The more common may include nausea, headaches, drowsiness and for some, an increased sensitivity to the sun. In very few cases some people have reported stomach pain or upset and vomiting. As with anything it is important to report all side effects to a qualified health professional.
